What if a vortex was to happen today or tomorrow? How would you react ? Well, if you don’t know how you would react . Then here is where I come in to give you some tips on how you should react. First you should make sure you have a first-aid kit. Every family or household should had a first-aid kit . Make sure you have heaters and blankets to keep warmth just in case any of your power goes out. After that make sure that you have enough food to cover this period of time. And don’t worry there are plenty of ways to have fun indoors.
Some activities you can do while you are indoors is watch movies, play board games or card games. Also you could make nice bakery treats. Another really popular thing you can do is just catch up on some sleep. You can call your friends or neighbors to check in on them and see how they are doing. Make sure that they things to keep them warm . And that they have food to feed their families. Lastly you could also make sure that you stay posted on the weather and the school closings.
This vortex is very serious and we wouldn’t want anyone to get hurt. So if you just follow these step and guidelines you should be fine. I hope you and you family are safe.
Dear Reader, I think everyone in Illinois has been hit with this blistering cold, but how do you survive it? To be honest, I stayed inside through the whole Polar Vortex. It's still happening, but it's not that bad. If you do have to go out, I recommend bundling up as much as possible. Mittens, fuzzy socks, and warm hats. Oh, and pack some Chapstick with you. Trust me, it'll be your best friend during the cold months. You should also drink something warm. That always makes me happy when I'm cold. You shouldn't be scared of the cold weather. That won't help at all. You should stay inside as much as possible, like I did. Watching cool movies and drinking hot chocolate would help keep you entertained if you're staying inside. To keep safe, be careful with all of the ice around. Slipping on ice is never fun. Well, I hope this helped. -Vanessa Arellano
Since its really cold outside, we need to find ways to stay warm. A lot of people stay home, but some are always outside. The best way for me to stay warm is to stay home and drink something hot like hot chocolate or coffee. Sometimes it gets boring at home, so I would like to go out. Still, I make sure i’m going somewhere indoor like the mall, movies, or an indoor gym.
If you are one of those people, who go outside, you should try your best to cover up. You should wear multiple layers of clothing, but don’t exaggerate. Consider just wearing one or two sweaters and a jacket. Obviously, wear pants and boots for the snow. Also, you could consider wearing hats, scarfs, and gloves. I know that keeps me warm; therefore, it may work for you perfectly fine.
Tyler Wilkerson- You should use salt to dissolve snow as shoveling snow can be very hard on your body and may cause a heart attack. Also, wear long johns under your pants. Long johns help protect your legs from cold winds, keeping them considerably warmer than normal. You should also eat a lot of protein. Protein will get burned in your body, but it is a very slow process and makes the body warmer. You should also wear a jacket under a big coat to keep warmer and more cold resistant. Always wear gloves when outside so you won't get frostbite and also wear a scarf.
Dear Reader, I know its very cold outside, so my advice to you is stay in and stay warm by being under blankets and maybe drinking a cup of hot chocolate. But before you do that send someone to go out to get some food for the days you'll be staying in because you never know how cold it can get over the next few days. I would advice you to get warm foods and foods that'll last longer then usual and wont spoil. But you cant take long because then you'll get frost bite. So go to the nearest grocery store to get the foods you would like to get. Look at the bright side, you can stay in and do nothing you don't have to go to work or school. You don't have to worry about nothing but the gas bill because i'm sure you'll want the heater to be on everyday since its extremely cold outside. You should be relaxed and calm because being worried won't do any better, it wont even change the fact that its freezing outside. You can watch movies all while eating popcorn. If you aren't that type of person you can find many things to do inside. Just hope that when the weather gets better you wont become that lazy person on the coach all day doing nothing. Do something active around the house, like maybe play Wii sports or Just dance. I'm sure that'll get your blood pumping. Sincerely, your friend, Priscilla Acosta.
If you really want to survive a polar vortex you should try to stay warm. If you can, stay inside. Be in your pajama pants, a long sleeve shirt, or have blankets on you if you want. I know staying inside can be REALLY boring, so you could stay away from being bored all day and have some fun inside. You could invite a friend over (that's if their parent lets them go out in the cold). If your friends parents don't let her go, be with your family. You guys can make hot chocolate, play some games, or just watch T.V. But if you really don't want to do all that, you could just relax and sleep.
Some tips if you have to go outside in the cold for school or work, wear a lot of layers of clothing. Make sure before you go out you got your gloves, hat, scarf, a fat jacket, and some boots. If you have a car and the next day you have to go somewhere, park it in the garage because if it's out in the cold it might not want to start and you wont be going anywhere. Also when you go out, if you have to take the train or bus, I suggest you don't because it's going to be way to cold.
Also you should let your water running, so the pipe wont freeze and then you don't have any water left. So try to stay inside, keep your water running, wear heavy clothing and don't freeze.
Dear Reader, It is perfectly fine to be upset on how the weather is outside. Especially if it is below 0 degrees. As we all know, Chicago and many other places fall into this problem. But we can't control the weather! But we can control what we do to cope with it. In this article, I will be giving you some tips on how to maintain your warmth, and your patience. Lets get warm! It is extremely hard to live in weather that can sometimes be BELOW 0 degrees! If you are currently living in an area where it is below 0 degrees, here are some tips to help you stay cozy and warm. To help warm up your house, tape up the sides of your windows and unused doors. By doing this, you are preventing cold air from coming into your home. and for the doors that you use regularly, use an old blanket, or a towel, fold it hot dog style, and place it at the bottom of the door. Instead of just sitting around and doing nothing, get active! the more you move your body, the more your body will heat up. You can just dance around your room to your favorite band, or do some chores, or even workout. Sure sitting under a blanket will keep you warm but getting up and being active will help keep you warm faster and longer. But remember to give yourself some relax time as well, instead of drinking ice cold water or soda, try drinking some tea or, everyone's favorite, hot chocolate. And if you are looking for something yummy to eat, eat some soup, or some nice and warm tasty food, like chicken! Hopefully these tips helped! Stay warm! -Destiny Marcos
dear reader, If you have ever experienced a polar vortex you'd know that it isnt the best expirience. Freezing cold weather, ice,and piles and piles of snow. So to keep warm during this time to keep warm you should either a)bundle up until you look like the michilin man or b) stay in and have some hot chocolate, stay under the covers, and turn up the heat in your house. Have some fun inside watch some TV, sleep,or if you can handle it go out shoveling for money. After snow storms is the best time to go shoveling because people will be either too cold or too lazy to go do it themselves. Whenever it snow a lot the first thing i do is call up my friend and ask them if they want to go shoveling for money. The last time we went shoveling we made about $200 in 4 or 5 hours. But if you cant handle the cold and don't like shoveling snow you can always stay in and relax with the heat up and the TV on. And who could forget about the hot chocolate and staying under the blankets to keep extra toasty. Angel Robles
This weather has been so out of control and crazy, people need to find shelter and stay warm and safe be with your families and enjoy there company while its there for you to enjoy.try to stay in the house and help who ever is in need of hep.
I think people should react in a claim way, because its not like its the end of the world but at the same time people are dying because of it. it is a very big issue but there is no need to make it worse by the way you react to it. i say to just stay claim and try to turn it in something good like having to spend time with your love ones that you dont have a lot of time for as much as you would want.
People can stay warm by taking shelter somewhere, staying with a friend or a family member. to me it is really important that people do take shelter somewhere no matter where at because the weather is cold that if you dont have shelter you will die because your body can not take all of it, it needs heat, your body has to at a certain body heat.so if its possiable to stay at a family members house if needed you should do so.
Some kind of tips that will help is maybe buy some board games, movies or something to keep you and your family busy and having fun , go to the store and buy everything you will need for the week so you dont have to keep coming out the house to go the store. make this time time fun, do something to keep you busy so time could fly fast and the next thing you know it, its spring and your back on your daily things and your kids are back out side playing in the yard Sarah Muro
Samariah P. : Dear Reader, ''To survive an polar vortex you will need warm clothing and heat. You have to make sure you have those to items to survive, if not you will probably die from frost bites. You should remain calm at all times while dealing with a polar vortex. If you start to "freak out", you have to call down. Why? Because you just need to stay focus.
A trick to help the Polar Vortex stay away, is to gone in your house, walk around in your underwear, and try to yarn all day. You have to treat this Polar Vortex as you do your family member. The Polar Vortex will destroy your town, so you need to destroy it. Hope this help!
Dear reader, As the temperature has been dropping the weather has been very cold and most of the schools have closed because of the safety of your children. When it comes to school make sure you send your child with warm clothes like a jacket, hat, mittens, and scarf. Make sure that your child is not waiting at the bus stop with only a little jacket they will get sick and will get frost bites. Also you and your child should stay inside at all times stay warm and make sure that you maintain your heater on. When facing this type of weather be sure that you watch the news for more information like today it is at a 16 degrees outside and partly cloudy. For the next three day we will have some snow. While on Monday and the three days after that, the weather will be partly cloudy and the wind will be still cold all you can do know will be to keep warm and wear lots of clothes. -Leticia Benitez
Tyra.W " Ways for people to survive the winter when it's negative degree weather would be by making sure that you cover up every part of your body leave no skin open to the cold for too long at the risk of frost bite, and is hats are a big part of your gear because most of you body heat is escaping from. facts show that 18 percent of people do die due to the cold weather. So layer up and keep extra covers in your car because there could be a traffic jam.
tricks that i that can help you stay warm while outdoors is, in 25-40 degree weather be proactive don"t just sit in one spot for 10 minutes it makes you feel colder by running or just moving around, it can make you feel warmer and take you mind sometimes off the cold. if the weather it 10-and below best thing is to stay indoor and bake some cookies :) yum right!!!!!! well with you being cold best thing would be to eat something warm to make you feel warm as well, try also drinking some hot chocolate, i mean who does't like chocolate but here are some fun tips on how to survive the extreme cold weather.
Dear reader, as I am aware that you are in a very bad situation. A cold situation. In order to survive this vortex you must do as I say in order to survive. First, try to avoid to go outside as much as possible. But I understand it is hard to stay inside when almost all the resources are outside. Try to make the remaining food from your home last as much as possible. If you come in contact with the outside, make sure it is for a good purpose because if exposed too long (10 minuets max.) you will suffer from severe health problems, such as frost bite, which could lead to death. If you are at home, make sure you have enough materials to keep warm, blankets, sweaters, jackets, socks, or any piece of clothing. Wrap yourself up as much as possible to avoid contact with the cold, cuddle up with family who is with you to create more heat. If it gets too hot, simply remove few items. Entertainment is something you might want, since you can not go outside. So i will suggest a few games you can play, with out electricity. Card games are fun to play, easy to learn, and the best part is there's dozens of games you can play or create on your own. Talking is something you can do for entertainment. Now some of you are probably wondering why talk? what is so fun about talking? Well for instance, you can open to your family or friends and tell them something you never told anyone before, which most of the time these sort of things are pretty entertaining . Talk about your future plans and explain your goal in order to succeed. Ask for support and most likely you will receive the help that you are needing. That is all I have to say, so I hope you take my advice. Stay safe and stay warm. -Johann Garcia
Dear Reader, We have been experiencing some extreme cold weather. Don't be scared, everything will be fine. My advice for keeping warm is to stay inside. but if you absolutely have to go outside,I'd suggest you only be outside for no more than 15 minutes. You may get frost bite if you stay out too long. If your skin begins to feel hard and pale,go inside and put the affected area under warm water not hot. If you start to feel drowsy when you are outside for a long time, you may have hypothermia. There are lot of cold weather injuries.
don’t worry if you’re stuck in the cold because there is some ways to surviving the cold. One way is to wear thermal shirts and pants under a big coat and a face mask. Also you must wear snow pants, long socks, and big winter boots to insure warmth. Clothing is a big part in the huge polar vortex because the more lightly you dress the more cold you will become. And the more insulated and heavier you dress the more warm you will become.
A second way is to stay inside to keep warm, and eat lots of food so that your body may burn those calories in the food, its like adding wood to a fire. the bigger the fire the more heat it produces. think of food as the wood and your body as the fire. so the more wood you have in the body the warmer you are. So eat lots of food to insure warmth and safety over all so that you come home safe.
A third way is to stuff your jackets with microwaved towels so that can give you an edge on getting warm outside. So what you haft to do is wet any towels you have and stick them into the microwave for a good 3-4 minutes. as soon as the microwave is done you must quickly put the towels in your coat to keep you warm outside.
Finally, in this tremendously cold weather people that are stick in the cold should think twice about how they dress before going outside. or keeping some tips to warmth because out there is some serious stuff. Remember this always, cold brakes for no one! He is a mean one, so beat the heat and stay warm!
In the terms of people reacting to the sudden polar vortex should remain calm. The snow and cold is normal since its winter, but never a cold this intense. Although its freezing outside and the snow doesn’t make it any better, panicking is not a good answer, nor is been frustrated. Keep calm and don’t panic, get well dressed if you HAVE to go outside, otherwise, stay indoors. Staying calm can help you think this through, getting yourself prepared for these days without getting into a panic attack helps you and other people.
The climate these days is below the average we would have in these days, yet people should not panic. In the terms of panicking, people can get into more major problems. Having a panicked mind won’t help you think critically or think at all. You will act on your instincts that will cause bad decision making, not paying attention to the consequences and ending up in a bigger problem than the one you were in before. One should never lose control and never panic in these situations, especially if you have a family or someone else you must care for. Remain calm and think about the things before you do them. - Helen Hernandez A2/B2
Dear Readers, Now I know a lot of you guys don’t like this cold weather as much as I do but there are ways to stay warm and still be warm. I know it’s seem crazy but there are ways like for example before you left the house take a nice long hot shower. And like for breakfast you can eat pancakes and eat bacon and drink out chocolate with your breakfast. Like for me I have to take the bus to school. So what i do is get my legging and wear leg warm over them and keep hand warmer with my and put feet warm in my boots.
Another to stay warm is by keep the heat on in the house. If you are a person that walk to school, work, or etc. One thing is that you could do is first go outside and check how cold it is outside. So for example if it’s 50 below degrees you should make some hot chocolate and put in a cup and drink the hot chocolate on your way to work.- Kelicia Daniel
Some of these are great examples on how to stay warm put I am not so shear about taking hot shower because once you go outside with your wet hair your going to get cold soon. -Guadalupe Cabrera A3/B3
Dear reader, don't panic in these type of situations because most of the time it makes situations worse than they are already. Stay in your house and wrap yourself in blankets. also to get warm you can put on layers of clothes, two or three pairs of socks and shoes and hats. Drink something warm like coffee or hot chocolate and eat soup to stay warm. Stay close to your family to stay warmer and turn the heater to higher temperature. Don't go outside unless it is to bring food from the store or if you need to do a chore or go to work. Don't let your kids go walking to school, instead let them take the bus or drive them to school. Buy and store alot of food so if you get trapped or if the grocery store closes down, you won't die of starvation. Also drive to work or to the hospital and if someone needs help then give them a hand. You can share food with your neighbors if they don’t have food and shovel snow in your house area before it’s to late and the snow gets hard. Put salt on the street and on your house so you dont hurt yourselves.

During cold weather ways to stay warm wear clothes, gloves, scarf, boots, and clothes that doesn’t reveal skin so you can stay warm as possible. Some tricks to staying a little more warmer is wear double socks and gloves, and girls can wear leggings under their pants. And it’s also important to wear a hat. During these cold conditions you should try not to be outside as much and if you are, not for a long period of time. If someone can give you a ride, take that chance instead of walking or taking a bus. To prevent getting sick, you need to dress accordingly to and wear warm clothes. If you are standing around in the cold try to move as much as you can because if you stand still your body gets cold but if you move around your body produces more heat, which allows you body to keep warm.
In cold temperatures people should react in a way where you care about your health. If you don’t dress warm you could get frostbite, which could lead to serious problems. If you are driving a long distance or even a short distance in your car you should keep jump cables and blankets just in case if anything were to happen. If you are driving somewhere not far from your house, still take a heavy jacket because your car may break down and in that case you're a little more prepared.
During a polar vortex, in order to prevent frostbites, hypothermia, accidents, or other situations from the storm you should stay home and keep yourselves warm. People should cover any spots where cold climate may enter with something to cover and you should turn on a heater or a fireplace. In the cold weather, people shouldn't worry about their priorities like work, shopping, or anything else besides feeding your family members. This is a situation when people should worry about their lives and not taking this weather like a minor 30 degree weather condition.
If there are really important things people need to do that require going outside, you need to bundle up if anybody wants to go outside. This is like a -20 or below degree temperature polar vortex people are experiencing. If anybody wants to go out, people need to wear heavy clothing such as two or three long sleeve shirts, a long john with two joggers over it or leggings with two joggers over it for girls, a sweater with a coat, gloves, two scarfs, two long socks, a hat with a hoodie over it, goggles only if it's snowing really hard, and boots with warm cushions. With this outfit for this weather, nobody should be freezing, getting frostbites, or getting hypothermia. This also gives everyone the opportunity to do the important things that need to get done.
If anybody's vehicle is stuck, somebody should bring a person with them to shovel out the snow. If you plan on driving, the person should turn on their vehicle and let it warm up for 10 or 15 minutes because the cold temperature will cause the vehicle to take a while to warm up. While the vehicle is warming up, everybody should brush of the snow and scrape of the ice on windows, mirrors, and lights so nobody will have a problem driving. Finally, to prevent car accidents, make sure you are driving at a cautious speed so your vehicle won't slip or go out of control. Also, make sure your lights are on so other vehicles will get a sign of stopping, driving, or reversing. Lastly, a polar vortex will cause a lot of snow falling, so this will cause everybody to be driving sightless. Especially in the dark. To prevent this, everybody's front lights should be on so they can see their way. Also their windshields should be on to wipe of the snow. This can prevent car accidents in severe weather conditions such as polar vortexes. With these advices, nobody should have a problem experiencing a polar vortex. - Rogelio Aguirre
Have you seen how crazy the freezing weather has been for these couple of days that's not even the worst part today it is 16 degrees outside, and it is going to drop to -2 degrees to night. I don’t know about you but I rather stay inside where it is warm and toasty. So since we have to go to school I would bundle up because for all of the following days the temperature is going to be -3 degrees outside and going to drop to -14 degrees on Monday, Tuesday it is going to be - 2 and -7 degrees, and Wednesday it is going to be 13 degrees. I would suggest to wear another pair of clothes under your school clothes or if that seems like too much to do you can just put on a scarf, gloves, and a hat if you don’t have one you can buy one at the school office for only $15.
I would say to stay inside as much as possible go to office hours get help on Algebra, Literature, English, Human Geo, or any homework. Take the bus to Jewels, Dunkin Donuts, or even to the movies do something inside so you don’t have to go outside in the freezing cold and get frostbite or hypothermia. Go home do homework and then play video games online with friends, spend time with your family. Especially if you go to UIC College Prep don’t get me wrong it is a good school and all just since I don’t get to go home until 6 o’clock then eat dinner, and start on homework I don’t get enough time with my family so cherish your time with your family when you get the chance to. In the end all that I am trying to say is to stay warm and safe with all of Chicago’s crazy cold temperature this year. -Guadalupe Cabrera A3/B3
For the past couple of days the weather has been crazy. It would be nice one day then the next day it would be so could that you can't go outside. For this type of weather I would stay inside and stay in all day. To survive this weather you would need to have toasty warm clothing. When you go outside to do something like go get milk or something then make sure that someone is with you, While at least let someone know where you are going. Stay inside, if you have to go outside then be careful with the streets they're icy. Make sure that you are always wearing some gloves, a hat, a scarf, and a winter jacket to stay warm. If you were me then you would be inside in the nice warm heat. To survive you have to stay calm and focus on something that you have to do today. Make sure that you have enough of food for the family so you don't have to leave the house after you heard there would be a horrible weather storm. When you are driving and you see that your gas tank is low, you have to put at least a tank full because then it would freeze next you know you can't leave.Whatever you do stay inside. If you have to go somewhere make sure you get quick and safe so you could get in the warm store or building. I want everyone to have a safe winter and a great day. - Victoria Sutor A2/B2
I think it's a good idea that if they are low on gas they should fill it up. and they shouldn't wait or else they could get stranded and their car can die. Lianna Cortes A/B3
Dear reader, recently a lot of us has experienced the extremely bad weather. Which has sent many people to the emergency room. But to avoid that, you need to be assure that your prepared for the weather. To do so , I recommend for all to wear several layers of clothing when going outside; and to add to that I say that it'll be safer in your home rather than outside in the cold. By the weather being so low you can get sick and even get Pneumonia. I've had a friend of my family die from Pneumonia January 23,2014. In this condition of weather the best way to stay warm is to be under warm covers and warm clothing, a cup of hot chocolate would be nice too; also having on the heat too. I can't stress how important it is to stay warm and away from going outside, this weather is so bad that schools have been closed down. Also make sure that you have even food provided for you just in case of a snow in, and also you should start a piggy bank for situation like this. If for any reason you don't have food or any money you should call a family member or a neighbor to assist you.Stay safe and warm! Best, Andrianna Mickey A3/B3
Angela Viruena A3 January 23,2014 Hey Readers! Are you getting cold due to the cold weather? Staying warm during the winter months is not always an easy thing to do. But with proper clothes and well eating, you might just survive the freezing weather. Especially here in Chicago which is currently at 3F, with windshield making it feel like -17 or more. Did you know when we are feeling cold , our metabolism slows down a little? Which makes us shiver. The body is attempting to make heat and keep our insides warm. Like when we work out and get hot, our bodies use more energy to cool off. Protecting yourself from the cold may feel like a lot of extra work (and layers), but being comfortable and warm during the winter is actually pretty cool. You can protect yourself from many illnesses such as the flu which is a big problem in parts of the US. Make sure when you go outside you take good coats, gloves, and hats to prevent snow bites. Thanks for reading! Hopefully you got some great tips!
I like how you said at the very end to wear good coats, gloves, and hats. It is a good place for it because if you put it in the beginning maybe the would forget about it after reading this whole thing. I also like how you said where you are and the temperature you are in. Edwin Hernandez Period 2
Dear reader, In a polar vortex any person should act calm and not destructive by any means in order to go through this event and survive. In order to stay warm you should wear basic clothing and a sweater with a larger overcoat on, this will then defend against cold winds for your body and keep you warm. As for your hands and head I recommend gloves and a hood or scarf to cover face and head but keep your eyes visible in order to see your surroundings. Of course these precautions should only be for when going outside to get any important necessities and traveling, since the best thing to do would be to stay inside during the majority of the time while this polar vortex is happening. You should also be informed at all times when this is happening to catch up on weather reports in order to know what the exact temperatures will be like and the conditions you will be experiencing like ice, traffic and severe cold. This will then aid you when a polar vortex is inbound on your location since knowing how to deal with this will base your chances of survival against the cold. In most cases the worst that can happen during a time like this would be sickness, frostbite, ammonia, and etc.

recently there have been freezing weathers in Chicago that can cause a serious sickness in an individual. about two weeks ago there was temperatures that were below zero and temeperature's like that can cause someone to get frostbite or any sickness around those same lines if any one's skin was exposed to this weather for about ten minuets or more. that's why these types of weathers cause schools to close for one or two days so far this has happened twice in Chicago.
something that i would recommend during these types of weathers is to get real bundled up to the point that you sweat.i say this because once you step outside you'll feel the cold and no that you know about the effects of this weather its better to prevent you catching a sickness. so thing you should wear are a jacket, a sweater, a hat , a scarf, underpants , pants , double socks, and shoe or boots. wearing this would be good enough to keep you warm if you have to leave your house. but remember if you dot need to go outside don't go outside and stay inside but if you do remember to dress warmly and your ready for your day. -jose cisneros A/B 3
Dear Readers, Everyone wants to feel warm during the winter. A person should wear hats, gloves, a big jacket, and boots. These items are great ways to keep your whole body warm. If you don't keep your body warm, then you can end up sick with the flu or cold. Theses things can help you avoid these sickness. Being active is a great way to keep your body warm as well. It's not like you have to play a sport or anything. You can jug in place to help you get warm. Standing around can make you colder than you were before. So make sure you are warm from head to toe ,and being active while your outside than standing around.-Gloria Arroyo A3/B3
Winter is here and well you're afraid of getting a cold or well you just want to beat the cold and stay warm!. Well you don't have to worry because i have some great tips for you to try and stay warm. One of the things you can do is wearing double clothing so that when you leave home you can be a little warmer than you would be with just one layer of clothes. This method works because you will be warm from the cold. Another way you can defeat the cold is by trying to go in a vehicle to everywhere you go. This will work because instead of walking to your destination. You will be going in your vehicle nice and warm. But you may want to warm up your vehicle first because you don’t want to be there waiting for it to warm up while you’re in there cold. -Miguel Diaz A/B 2
How is the cold treating you? If you don't like the cold STAY INSIDE. If you don't have a purpose for being outside , don't risk getting frost bite. Don't you think it would feel good just to laying down in bed, warm, and watching movies all day? Or be outside playing risking for your self of getting sick?
For those that like to be outside when its freezing! When you go outside wear a lot of warm clothes like , sweaters , coats , jackets , gloves ,hats , etc. Try to stay warm while you do your outside activity. When you’re outside too long and your hands or feet are exposed to the cold weather , you get frost bite. Frost bite is when your fingers or feet freeze up and you lose feeling or touch. In most cases , people get frost bite and they end up having to get their fingers or feet cut off. So if you go outside the best thing to do is gear up and stay warm. -Allen Arano A/B 3
Dear reader, As you may know we are going through a terrible and harsh winter in Chicago, and you might be thinking “how on earth am I going to survive this winter?”. Lucky for you, I am an expert in this topic. Growing up in Chicago, I know that in the winter the best thing you can do is wear layers. What I mean when I say that is that you need to wear an undershirt, a long sleeve shirt, a sweater, and a coat. The more layers you have the warmer you will be, even if they’re not that thick. Also, drink hot beverages, like hot cocoa, tea, coffee etc. Drinking something hot will warm up your hands and stomach, and make you feel more comfortable. Also, eat more proteins and carbohydrates, surprisingly this helps your body be a bit warmer than if you just eat anything. When you eat proteins and carbohydrates, your body takes a bit more energy and time to break them down, which heats up your body. These are the three best things you can do to stay warm and survive this cold weather, best of luck! - Damaris Carrasco A/B2
Dear Reader, People can survive a polar vortex by staying inside and keeping yourself from going outside. If you have to go outside make sure you are wearing double pants, shirts, gloves, sock, and other things that might keep you warm. Do not go outside if it is cold and you only have a sweater because you would freeze outside. You might stay warm by staying indoors and not going out like you usually do. Some tips or tricks that may keep you warm is having a scarf, hat, and gloves when you go outside also as like I said by putting clothing on top of clothing would keep you warm. When you are outside try putting on a hat because that is what keeps you warm because you head is the number one thing that you need to protect from going outside. This does not mean going outside in the cold with only a hat on this means you can also put on a hat and be bundle up. Stay safe and be warm. -Kassandra E. Munoz A2/B2
Dear reader A polar vortex is a serious thing. Some tips that i can give you that is based on the extreme cold weather is that you could probably try to find a shelter to stay in no matter what stay in the shelter which is a better way because You would not be freezing cold. Try to buy as much food as possible and keep warm with a blanket that way you would not feel as cold as you were. Also you can try to do something that is physical that can keep you sweating and having you warm.A great workout may take your mind off on how cold it is, That way you are focused on that specific exercise. Also in case you need to go to a far place or the store be covered with many layers of sweaters and a big jacket. Try to have a scarf, mittens, and a snow hat to keep your head warm.Wear boots because the snow will get into your shoes if you step on it.warm up the car before you get on it because your car will be having problems when trying to drive in the snow again. Buy hot items like chocolate to make hot chocolate ,or tea, But also remember to drive with caution because the roads can be dangerous to drive in due to the cause of the snow.Do not panic in case you do get stuck call for help ,or keep a shovel to try to dig yourself out of the snow. If you can Help others help them if you need help also. Other tips that you need is try to maintain a healthy eating style to avoid getting sick in a uncontrollable weather that is going on.Drink enough water to keep hydrated. Warm your blankets .Microwave your blankets in need any warmer. And remember to bond with family.Play a game that will get your mind of the cold. Do things like board games of play video games any kind of game will help you pass time. Thats my advice to you.
Dear reader, To survive a polar vortex do not react. The best thing to do is to stay calm and keep warm. It is understanding that some people might freak out more than others, but that would just make matters worse. Reacting to a situation like this is not going to help. Knowing that there has been worse you should always have a backup plan for everything. If you don’t, that’s ok these situations do not last forever. To help relieve the stress on you or your family watch the news. Make sure that you know what is going to happen because that gives you time to work and make a plan on what you are going to do. If you watch the news, you can end up going to a family members house, so you don’t have to worry about their safety because you know you are with them. Stay at home to keep warm, make hot chocolate, cover your windows with plastic wrap so that the cool air won’t be as much of a target to you, and don’t go to school or to work. Keeping warm and safe is much more important. To stay warm you should have a lot of blankets with you and do not go outside for any reason. Put the heat on high at home. If you have a heater, make sure that you do not plug it in in close corners, by a child, or in the room my beds. Heaters can cause fires and are not safe for children, so if you have one keep it out of their reach.
don’t worry if you’re stuck in the cold because there is some ways to surviving the cold.
He is a mean one, so beat the cold and stay warm! Xe Cabrera A2/B2
Dear Reader, In order to survive a polar vortex you will first need to remain calm. Then you will need to pack layers of clothing to avoid the cold. Try to cover every inch of the body. Then you will have to find shelter in order to survive. If you can’t then look for a place where you can grave materials in order to make your shelter. When making the shelter try to cover any unnecessary holes that aren’t needed so that the wind doesn't come in. Then try to see if you can make a fire as another resource for staying warm. Then you will need to look for food, look somewhere near so that you won’t freeze. This will help you to survive from starvation. Its best to go look for food when there is no wind blowing so you can at least survive a good amount of time. Then try to keep calm and stay warm. Also in order to survive you will need to find a resource of medicine incase you get a high fever. Ms.Wright Blanca Cruces A2/B2
In order to survive you need to have water and food to keep you alive. You need to have something warm to keep you from getting a frost bite. You need light so you can see what’s around you. You should react calmly because the more you stress out, the less likely you have in living. In order to stay warm you must rub your hand together to generate heat and run them all over you body to keep you warm. The more you move around the more heat you body will produce. The trick is to keep rubbing your hand together to make your body to have heat. Another trick is to have some kind of match to start some fire. If you don’t have wood then try to use clothing and paper, light the paper and place it on the clothing and that should start some kind of fire, and should keep you warm for a while.
To survive you need to have the most important resources to live, water, food. If you don't have food or water then you don't have a good chance of surviving. You need water to drink, if you don't have water in your system you will die because of dehydration. And if you don't have food then you die of starvation. That's why you need the Most important resources to live. That what you need to survive. You have to a cover to have, to keep you warm. If the weather is really bad and you have no clue where to go to your friends house. And try to start a fire and stay in a room where you both are warm and always have food to make sure that you don't run out and have to buy some more. Another tip is to buy food before. So you don't run out. Buy it before and check the weather earlier so you know what's coming. That's tips on how to survive the vortex. Iliana Barcenas A2/B2 Ms.Wright
Dear Reader, some ways to survive a polar vortex is to stay inside your house where you will be warm and not cold.If you really have to go somewhere like go to the grocery store or some other things then go, but if its something not important then don't go just stay inside your house where you will be very warm. some ways that you can keep yourself warm if you are going outside then you should wear two shirts, two jackets, two pair of socks, and a hat and gloves to keep yourself very warm.
Some tips so that when you like take your kids to school in the car, you can first go outside go to the car and turn the car on, then go back inside and just wait until your kids are changing and the car will be heating up.Then by the time you go back to the car to take your kids the car will be warm instead of being freezing and cold. Another great tip that you can do is that you can take your clothes that you are gonna take and put them on the microwave and put time for about 1 minute. Once you take them out they are going to be really warm and you can come outside really warm.
The advice that I would give you if someone was in a polar vortex and didn’t know what to do. I would say that for them to remain inside until the situation is over with, because you don’t want to chance going out somewhere even though you know it can be very risky because you don’t know what’s going to happen at all. Like you can get stranded somewhere or there's a chance of death if you plan to go out somewhere in the polar vortex. So I would recommend to stay inside at all times during this.
I would also say to dress warm, because you might get cold in your house from the polar vortex. And what I mean by “dressing warm” is to like to wear a sweatshirt with like your comfortable clothes that you were when you get home. And to just keep your house warm so you don’t freeze to death or anything like that because that wouldn’t be good.
Another thing that i would also tell you to do is to remain calm because if you worry about things during the polar vortex, then it would most likely led to something that you might regret on doing. Such as worrying about something that you know that everything is going to be alright with instead of feeling depressed and such about a situation. That's all of the advice that i would give to someone that needed it during the polar vortex. Thanks for reading!
During a polar vortex you should try to go out to the store only once. Buy anything you may need during the cold weather such as water, food, and warm clothing. Once you think you have everything go home and stay warm. Do not go out again if there is no need to, but if you do go out wear the warmest clothes and do not stay out for long. Listen to the news and stay alert of the weather. Try eating foods like soup which will help your body stay warm. If any f your clothes get wet while outside, try to go inside as soon as possible and take the wet clothes off. You are more likely to get frostbite and hypothermia when wearing wet clothes.
Dear Reader, Cold, Cold weather is here! Don’t get mad or angry because of the cold because there’s no point of doing it because it’s not going to change anything at all. I know the struggle of getting to work on time because of the traffic. But what are you going to do about it because whining is going to help, and I know you may be pretty upset that you can’t go out freely without a coat to play a sport or something. Go play in a gym or something. I am sure there is something good that came out of this polar vortex. You had no school for 2 days thats good it’s like not going to work. Except we don’t really get paid so... You may be very cold due to the polar vortex. But there are ways to stay warm too! You can cook a nice warm soup or buy a coffee. Try wearing more than one jacket if you can. Try staying in a heated place because when you’re outside for a long time your blood can freeze. There is really nothing that will keep you completely away from this very very cold weather but somethings can keep you a bit warm for a little. But some tips would be to make sure you have a nice warm jacket and maybe a little sweater under. A hat and not a snapback type hat because believe me i’ve seen people that are in below zero temperatures and wear a snapback like its protecting you from the coldness, I look at them and think to myself “Are they crazy!” Also i’ve seen people wear two pairs of socks I guess that can help too. Finally try to wear thermals under your pants because that can keep you warm too.
Dear Reader, The Polar Vortex is a serious winter storm and I believe its heading your way. I think you will stay warm during the storm by preparing for it a few days before it hits. All people will react differently from the storm but some actions you should not do is scream like a mad man, people should remain calm and try to help each other out. If you have a plan and someone starts to panic most likely your plan will be ruined.
When you’re preparing for the storm you should be thinking about staying warm and getting food because I think no one would want to go outside to get food when there is a Polar Vortex outside of your house. People should get many blankets, some winter hats, get many pears of socks, get gloves, get as many heaters that you think you will need, and get something to drink that is hot like hot chocolate, tea, and coffee.
Some little things you can do is get a little radio so you can hear any important things that will be going on during the storm, some games to entertain your family during the Polar Vortex, and you can even get a T.V. If your heaters stop working you can always ask if your neighbor can help or if you can go to his house and you can do the same if he asks for help. Many people can stay warm by using each others help. Ricardo Velez A2.B2
The polar vortex has been a big problem for the people in Chicago. It was very dangerous outside for most of the people who had to take the bus ,and it was dangerous for those who had to drive. The wind was blowing very hard ,so people had to protect themselves. People suffered from frostbite and had to go to the hospital.
Schools was canceled because kids could not make it to school. Homeless people was freezing because the did not have any warmth ,so the polar vortex was a big problem.

It has come to my knowledge that we don't know too much about "The Polar Vortex" it has come across all over the world and now it might hit the United States. My advice to you is "Bundle Up!" What does bundle up mean? Well, it means you should stay warm at all times and make sure you know how to keep yourself warm. You must wear the following: Hats, gloves, sweaters, jackets, and boots. Why? because it keeps the body warm, your body temperature won't always keep you warm and you will get frost bites if you don't do this. You also need to make sure you have warm meals like oatmeal, tea, coffee, soup, and hot chocolate.
For your house and other belongings to keep this storm away is that you need a heater, shovel, snow blower, and salt. Why would I need to keep my house warm? You need to keep your house warm because your pipes can freeze, it’s cold for everyone in the house, and you have to repair if your pipes break. The is kind of like you because in order to survive you need to have common sense and skills. What do you mean by that? To have skill and common sense during this winter disaster you need to know how you’re going to get somewhere, how am I going to fix something, and this is what I’m going to do. This right here is called problem solving because you need to know how to survive.
You always need to remain calm when this weather occurs, but sometimes we have so much panic we can’t control it. Well, it’s a storm and it’s not like you have never seen one before but I understand if you’re thinking about what if I get frostbite or other things. This is why I provided you with information so you can be in good condition. If you hear the news saying that a big storm is coming you should already have your gear ready when it hits so you don’t get stuck with a problem. It’s great that you now have knowledge about how to be safe and warm.
Dear reader, To survive a polar vortex I think you should stay home with your family and sit in a hot place in you house. If you want to stay healthy and not be sick then you should stay in the house because if you go outside you will become cold and get sick. Polar vortex is very dangerous for homeless people because they have no where to stay.
when a polar vortex come to your city you should block all the windows and doors so the air won't come in your house.Another thing you should do is gather all the things you think would keep you warm and sit by your fireplace or heater.A polar vortex can be harmful if you don't have heat and your house because you can end up freezing.
When polar vortex come to your city you need react fast but calmly because it can be dangerous especially if you not bundle up when you go outside. If a polar vortex come to your city I think you should be as safe as possible.polar vortex is very harmful and I think people should stay in their homes and if they are homeless they should try to find a shelter because it can cause someone to die from being frozen.
Many people don’t know the dangers of a Polar Vortex. It gets really cold out and some people still choose to be out. If there is absolutely no need to be out on the streets, then stay home where it’s warm. And you don’t risk getting frostbite, or any other sickness caused by extremely cold weathers. If you need to go to the grocery store or anything that is VERY important, then do so. But make sure you dress adequately . There are many ways to stay safe during a Polar Vortex. The most important one would be to stay warm inside your home. You stay nice and warm inside your house, and you don’t get sick because of the cold. Make sure you buy enough food to last through the horrible weather, so you don’t have to go out into the cold and constantly going back and forth to the grocery store. People shouldn’t react in an extreme matter when it gets really cold out. There is no need for that. Some people are already used to the cold, so they react normally. Some people might just be visiting during a polar vortex, so they get frightened. Driving can be way more dangerous when it’s cold out and it’s snowing. But, to stay safe during these extreme weathers, the best thing to do is to stay home.
Tyler Wilkerson-You bundle up with big coats and long johns. You should also stay inside if you can to stay warm.
ReplyDelete“Dear Reader,”
ReplyDeleteWhat if a vortex was to happen today or tomorrow?

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteI think everyone in Illinois has been hit with this blistering cold, but how do you survive it?

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteSince its really cold outside, we need to find ways to stay warm.
Stephanie Alcocer
Tyler Wilkerson- You should use salt to dissolve snow as shoveling snow can be very hard on your body and may cause a heart attack. Also, wear long johns under your pants. Long johns help protect your legs from cold winds, keeping them considerably warmer than normal. You should also eat a lot of protein. Protein will get burned in your body, but it is a very slow process and makes the body warmer. You should also wear a jacket under a big coat to keep warmer and more cold resistant. Always wear gloves when outside so you won't get frostbite and also wear a scarf.
ReplyDeleteDear Reader,
ReplyDeleteI know its very cold outside, so my advice to you is stay in and stay warm by being under blankets and maybe drinking a cup of hot chocolate.
Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteIf you really want to survive a polar vortex you should try to stay warm.

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteIt is perfectly fine to be upset on how the weather is outside.
Stay warm!
-Destiny Marcos
dear reader,
ReplyDeleteIf you have ever experienced a polar vortex you'd know that it isnt the best expirience.
And who could forget about the hot chocolate and staying under the blankets to keep extra toasty.

dear reader:
ReplyDeleteThis weather has been so out of control and crazy, people need to find shelter and stay warm and safe be with your families and enjoy there company while its there for you to enjoy.try to stay in the house and help who ever is in need of hep.
Some kind of tips that will help is maybe buy some board games, movies or something to keep you and your family busy and having fun , go to the store and buy everything you will need for the week so you dont have to keep coming out the house to go the store. make this time time fun, do something to keep you busy so time could fly fast and the next thing you know it, its spring and your back on your daily things and your kids are back out side playing in the yard

ReplyDeleteA trick to help the Polar Vortex stay away, is to gone in your house, walk around in your underwear, and try to yarn all day. You have to treat this Polar Vortex as you do your family member. The Polar Vortex will destroy your town, so you need to destroy it. Hope this help!
Dear reader,
ReplyDeleteAs the temperature has been dropping the weather has been very cold and most of the schools have closed because of the safety of your children.

ReplyDeletetricks that i that can help you stay warm while outdoors is, in 25-40 degree weather be proactive don"t just sit in one spot for 10 minutes it makes you feel colder by running or just moving around, it can make you feel warmer and take you mind sometimes off the cold. if the weather it 10-and below best thing is to stay indoor and bake some cookies :) yum right!!!!!! well with you being cold best thing would be to eat something warm to make you feel warm as well, try also drinking some hot chocolate, i mean who does't like chocolate but here are some fun tips on how to survive the extreme cold weather.

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteWe have been experiencing some extreme cold weather.
This is good advice I'm going to use your advice to help me be safe. Thanks for the help.

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeletedon’t worry if you’re stuck in the cold because there is some ways to surviving the cold.
Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteIn the terms of people reacting to the sudden polar vortex should remain calm.

Dear Readers,
ReplyDeleteNow I know a lot of you guys don’t like this cold weather as much as I do but there are ways to stay warm and still be warm.

Dear reader,
ReplyDeletedon't panic in these type of situations because most of the time it makes situations worse than they are already.

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteDuring cold weather ways to stay warm wear clothes, gloves, scarf, boots, and clothes that doesn’t reveal skin so you can stay warm as possible.
Dear reader,
ReplyDeleteDuring a polar vortex, in order to prevent frostbites, hypothermia, accidents, or other situations from the storm you should stay home and keep yourselves warm.

ReplyDeleteHave you seen how crazy the freezing weather has been for these couple of days that's not even the worst part today it is 16 degrees outside, and it is going to drop to -2 degrees to night.

ReplyDeleteFor the past couple of days the weather has been crazy.

ReplyDeleteIn this condition of weather the best way to stay warm is to be under warm covers and warm clothing, a cup of hot chocolate would be nice too; also having on the heat too.

Hey Readers!

Deleterecently there have been freezing weathers in Chicago that can cause a serious sickness in an individual. about two weeks ago there was temperatures that were below zero and temeperature's like that can cause someone to get frostbite or any sickness around those same lines if any one's skin was exposed to this weather for about ten minuets or more. that's why these types of weathers cause schools to close for one or two days so far this has happened twice in Chicago.
ReplyDeletesomething that i would recommend during these types of weathers is to get real bundled up to the point that you sweat.i say this because once you step outside you'll feel the cold and no that you know about the effects of this weather its better to prevent you catching a sickness. so thing you should wear are a jacket, a sweater, a hat , a scarf, underpants , pants , double socks, and shoe or boots. wearing this would be good enough to keep you warm if you have to leave your house. but remember if you dot need to go outside don't go outside and stay inside but if you do remember to dress warmly and your ready for your day. -jose cisneros A/B 3

ReplyDeleteEveryone wants to feel warm during the winter.
Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteWinter is here and well you're afraid of getting a cold or well you just want to beat the cold and stay warm!.

Dear Reader ,
ReplyDeleteHow is the cold treating you?

Dear reader,
ReplyDeleteAs you may know we are going through a terrible and harsh winter in Chicago, and you might be thinking “how on earth am I going to survive this winter?”.

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeletePeople can survive a polar vortex by staying inside and keeping yourself from going outside.

ReplyDeleteA polar vortex is a serious thing.
Dear reader,
ReplyDeleteTo survive a polar vortex do not react.

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteIn order to survive a polar vortex you will first need to remain calm.

Dear reader,
ReplyDeleteIn order to survive you need to have water and food to keep you alive.

ReplyDeletesome ways to survive a polar vortex is to stay inside your house where you will be warm and not cold.If you really have to go somewhere like go to the grocery store or some other things then go, but if its something not important then don't go just stay inside your house where you will be very warm. some ways that you can keep yourself warm if you are going outside then you should wear two shirts, two jackets, two pair of socks, and a hat and gloves to keep yourself very warm.

ReplyDeleteDear Reader,
The advice that I would give you if someone was in a polar vortex and didn’t know what to do.
Sincerely, Crystal

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteDuring a polar vortex you should try to go out to the store only once.

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteCold, Cold weather is here!

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteThe Polar Vortex is a serious winter storm and I believe its heading your way.

Dear Reader,
ReplyDeleteThe polar vortex has been a big problem for the people in Chicago.

ReplyDeleteDear Readers,
It has come to my knowledge that we don't know too much about "The Polar Vortex" it has come across all over the world and now it might hit the United States.
Sincerely,

Dear reader,
ReplyDeleteTo survive a polar vortex I think you should stay home with your family and sit in a hot place in you house.

ReplyDeleteThere are many ways to stay safe during a Polar Vortex.
